By the end of The 2007–2009 Financial Crisis: Credit, Risk & Responses you should be able to:
- I can explain leverage and vulnerability.
- I can explain a historical connection using relevant evidence and qualify the conclusion.
4 questions, written answer, each with a worked explanation.
Vocabulary used: context, evidence, interpretation, leverage, liquidity.
Problem 1
Answer and explanation
Separate assets, debt, equity, and access to cash. A paper valuation, a loss, and an inability to meet immediate payments are related but different conditions. Explain the balance-sheet mechanism without treating every financial firm as having the same risk.
Problem 2
Answer and explanation
Identify the instrument, exposure, and channel transmitting a shock. Selling a claim can transfer some risk while creating or retaining other connections. A product’s rating or label is not proof that every holder understood or avoided losses.
Problem 3
Answer and explanation
Explain the feedback mechanism and the relevant period. A falling market index is one indicator, not a full measure of hardship. Compare employment, output, access to credit, household losses, and regional differences.
Problem 4
Answer and explanation
Evaluate a specific measure using authority, timing, scale, implementation, distribution, and alternatives. A recovery following a policy does not alone quantify its effect. Compare mechanisms and other conditions rather than assuming one preferred policy explains the whole result.
