Chapter 8 · Ecosystems & Conservation Decisions

Assigned readings

Follow the chapter question: How can biological evidence guide decisions in changing ecosystems?

This week’s goals

Read What would count as conservation progress? at this chapter’s launch, then use its linked unit explanations and source records in the assigned sessions.

Five flexible sessions, normally about 50–60 minutes. Unit study uses three sessions. The sample keeps a complete 90-minute extended sitting paired with about 30 minutes of correction; extend teaching when needed.

Session 1 · Energy Flow in Ecosystems — explain and transfer

Use the worked case and a changed condition to test independent understanding.

Your task

Study the illustrated worked case, attempt varied practice and the changed independent case, then revise the opening model and complete the exit check.

  1. Prepare the assigned reading and identify the question.
  2. Trace the figures and retain a labeled first model or prior attempt.
  3. Complete the stated task before opening guidance.
  4. Compare reasoning with criteria, explain a correction and retain the revised evidence.
Hint and response guidance

Name the structures, quantities, system boundary and assumptions before selecting a mechanism.

The outputs are 1,200 kJ and 96 kJ. The stated transfer fractions define this comparison; ten percent is an approximation, not a compulsory constant.

  • Use the stated evidence and correct units.
  • Explain a biological mechanism or relationship.
  • Show intermediate reasoning with a labeled figure or calculation.
  • State a limitation and a useful revision/test.

Session 2 · Biogeochemical Cycles — observe and build

Illustrative evidence case. Material moves between reservoirs and forms; a local stock depends on usable forms, input and output.

Your task

Read the chapter background and unit language. Make a first model, study the core explanation and Parts 1–2, then attempt their visual questions and checks.

It reaches 109 units under constant-rate assumptions: 100+3×(8−5). It transfers existing carbon from another reservoir; conservation concerns the complete boundary, not constant amount in each store.

  • Use the stated evidence and correct units.
  • Explain a biological mechanism or relationship.
  • Show intermediate reasoning with a labeled figure or calculation.
  • State a limitation and a useful revision/test.

Session 3 · Biogeochemical Cycles — connect and apply

Nitrogen fixation converts atmospheric N₂ into forms that can enter biological nitrogen use. Nitrification and denitrification are different microbial transformations; denitrification can return nitrogen to gaseous forms under suitable conditions. Many plants take up nitrogen compounds rather than directly using N₂, with some relying on microbial associations. Availability depends on pathways, soil/water conditions and transport, not only the total nitrogen nearby. A diagram should trace compound forms and mechanisms rather than assign every microbial process the word fixation.

Your task

Study Parts 3–4 and any named source records. Attempt the whole-unit application with labeled mechanisms, correct quantities and a limitation.

The appropriate chemical transformation and uptake pathway are needed; atmospheric abundance and usable form differ. They constrain different steps in the pathway; one input alone does not uniquely establish the final oxygen outcome.

  • Use the stated evidence and correct units.
  • Explain a biological mechanism or relationship.
  • Show intermediate reasoning with a labeled figure or calculation.
  • State a limitation and a useful revision/test.

Session 4 · Biogeochemical Cycles — explain and transfer

The final store is 50+4×(12−9)=62 units. Twelve units/year is an input flux, not the stock or net annual gain; the net gain is three units/year.

  • Use the stated evidence and correct units.
  • Explain a biological mechanism or relationship.
  • Show intermediate reasoning with a labeled figure or calculation.
  • State a limitation and a useful revision/test.

Session 5 · Human Impact & Conservation — observe and build

Illustrative evidence case. Intervention, survey effort and environmental conditions can change together.

Your task

Read the chapter background and unit language. Make a first model, study the core explanation and Parts 1–2, then attempt their visual questions and checks.

No. A measure needs a plausible connection with the diagnosed pressure; multiple interacting threats may require different responses. They can represent different habitats or reduce correlated disturbance risk, depending on species and threats; the design needs evidence and goals.

  • Use the stated evidence and correct units.
  • Explain a biological mechanism or relationship.
  • Show intermediate reasoning with a labeled figure or calculation.
  • State a limitation and a useful revision/test.
