Statistical Questions & Distributions — Drills
Statistical Questions & Distributions has 4 drill skills. Each one generates fresh questions every time, with a hint and full worked steps, so you can keep practising a single skill until it settles.
What these drills cover
These questions use 9 ideas from the course. Follow any of them for a definition, where it is taught, and what it leads to.
- Mean — Two kinds of centre: the balance point, and the middle value.
- Range — The set of outputs that actually occur.
- Cluster — A group of dots bunched together.
- Outlier — A dot far away from the rest of the pattern.
- Number line — A line with numbers increasing to the right.
- Height — The perpendicular distance from the base to the opposite corner.
- Statistical question — One that anticipates variability in the answers.
- Distribution — The pattern of how the values are spread out.
- Dot plot — A chart with one dot per value, stacked above a number line.
Which
Unlimited questions of this kind are generated in the app. Two examples:
Problem 1
Which of these is a statistical question?
- What shoe sizes do sixth-graders wear?
- What is my shoe size?
- Both
- Neither
Worked answer
What shoe sizes do sixth-graders wear?
The one asking about a group produces many answers
The one about a single person has just one
Counting
Unlimited questions of this kind are generated in the app. Two examples:
Problem 1
A dot plot has stacks of 4, 6, 12, 2, 3 dots. How many values are there altogether?
Worked answer
27
4 + 6 + 12 + 2 + 3 = 27
Problem 2
A dot plot has stacks of 5, 5, 7, 7, 5 dots. How many values are there altogether?
Worked answer
29
5 + 5 + 7 + 7 + 5 = 29
Shape
Unlimited questions of this kind are generated in the app. Two examples:
Problem 1
A histogram has bars of height 12, 8, 4, 2, 1. What shape is the distribution?
- Symmetric
- Skewed right
- Skewed left
- Double-humped
Worked answer
Skewed right
The tail stretches to the right
Problem 2
A histogram has bars of height 1, 2, 4, 8, 12. What shape is the distribution?
- Symmetric
- Skewed right
- Skewed left
- Double-humped
Worked answer
Skewed left
The tail stretches to the left
Range
Unlimited questions of this kind are generated in the app. Two examples:
Problem 1
A dot plot runs from 11 to 33. Find the range.
Worked answer
22
33 - 11 = 22
Problem 2
A dot plot runs from 16 to 34. Find the range.
Worked answer
18
34 - 16 = 18
