Theme & Central Idea — Drills · Grade 9 English

Chapter: Close Reading & Literary Analysis

What these drills covers

By the end of Theme & Central Idea you should be able to:

2 questions, written answer, each with a worked explanation.

Vocabulary used: theme, central idea, universal theme.

Problem 1

State the method in your own words, then apply it to one fresh detail.
Answer and explanation

A topic names a subject, such as trust. A theme is a supported interpretation of what a text suggests about that subject. It may be stated or implied, and need not be a moral rule. Show an actual application before considering the method recalled.

Use the criteria to compare your reasoning, not to copy the model’s wording. A supported alternative interpretation may earn full credit.

Response criteria

  • Make an accurate, focused claim or revision.
  • Use a relevant detail or a clearly explained language choice.
  • Explain the relationship and recognize a relevant limit.

Problem 2

Correct this mistake in one or two sentences: “The theme is trophy. All trophies symbolize success.”
Answer and explanation

Trophy is an object or topic, not a complete interpretation. Explain the change from concealment to shared use and limit the claim to this story.
