Chapter: Close Reading & Literary AnalysisWhat these drills covers
By the end of Theme, Symbol & Motif you should be able to:
- I can trace how symbols, motifs, allegory, and archetype carry a work's themes and gather meaning across a whole text.
- I can analyze how two or more themes develop and interact — complicating one another rather than merely coexisting.
2 questions, written answer, each with a worked explanation.
Vocabulary used: theme, central idea, symbol, motif, allegory, archetype.
Problem 1
Answer and explanation
A topic names a subject, such as trust. A theme is a supported interpretation of what a text suggests about that subject. It may be stated or implied, and need not be a moral rule. Show an actual application before considering the method recalled.
Use the criteria to compare your reasoning, not to copy the model’s wording. A supported alternative interpretation may earn full credit.
Response criteria
- Make an accurate, focused claim or revision.
- Use a relevant detail or a clearly explained language choice.
- Explain the relationship and recognize a relevant limit.
