Teaching English 7 at home
Teach reading and writing through complete texts, specific evidence and revision. A different interpretation can be strong when the learner explains it with accurate references.
Prepare before the lesson
- Read the assigned selection and its context notes. Locate the passage, paragraph or line that the lesson asks the learner to interpret.
- Read the model and marking criteria before the conference. Distinguish a possible interpretation from the only acceptable answer.
- Plan time for reading, an independent first attempt, discussion and revision. Longer drafts need more than one sitting.
Teach, discuss and check
- Ask the learner to summarize what actually happens or what the author argues before moving to interpretation.
- Model how to locate and explain one piece of evidence. Ask why it supports the claim, rather than accepting an unexplained quotation.
- Let the learner draft before opening the model. Discuss one substantial improvement in ideas, evidence or organization before editing sentences.
- Use an independent text or changed writing task to check transfer. Keep both the first draft and the revision.
Judge the reasoning
Use these discussion criteria with the unit’s own marking guidance. They are a feedback framework, not a universal numerical grade.
- Makes a clear, relevant claim or establishes a clear purpose.
- Uses accurate textual details, examples or source references.
- Explains the reasoning and organizes ideas for the reader.
- Revises deliberately and controls language sufficiently for meaning.
Keep a reading response with references, an original draft and revision, and a short explanation of a writing choice. A self-rating is useful reflection but is not a parent-awarded writing grade.
When the learner needs support
- Read aloud or use an accessible text presentation when decoding would obscure the intended comprehension task; record the support.
- Use a short oral rehearsal or evidence organizer before drafting when necessary.
- Give specific feedback on one or two choices, and ask the learner to explain the revision instead of rewriting the work for them.
Plan this course
English 7 is a complete proposed 36-week course with 180 scheduled class sessions. Eight chapters contain forty focused units, supplied short readings, a complete novel, sustained writing, language instruction, discussion, presentation, chapter workshops and assessments. Students follow chapters and units; parents use the separate weekly plan.
Five 40–45-minute class sessions each week, plus 15–20 minutes of independent reading most days. Each unit has three scheduled class sessions; each chapter ends with a three-session workshop, a review session, and a quiz session. Twelve consolidation sessions and eight exam/feedback sessions complete the 180-session plan. Treasure Island has two chapters in each of 17 designated reading weeks, covering all 34 before the whole-book essay. Readiness may require longer; the timing is a planning estimate, not a measured learning guarantee or legal attendance certification.
36 authored weeks are available. Keep each subject’s week number independent and adjust after checking understanding.
Materials and records
Save chapter-pair novel notes, annotations, quotations with locations, separate paraphrase/commentary notes, source evaluations, first and revised drafts, ten sentence/vocabulary entries, discussion notes, a presentation plan, and marked assessments. Keep a separate paper or exported copy of substantial work; local learner storage is not a cloud backup.
Use the course assessments
Use exit tickets to identify misunderstandings. Each chapter has a workshop, ten review questions, and a ten-question quiz covering all five units. Take the 90-minute midterm after Chapter 4, the separate 45-minute sample paper before the final, and the 120-minute final after all eight chapters. Written answers require human marking. Consider the complete-book journal and writing portfolio alongside test performance.
