Chapter 7 · Evolution, Ancestry & Biodiversity

Assigned readings

Follow the chapter question: How do heritable differences and changing conditions shape populations over generations?

This week’s goals

Read A changed population and a relationship hypothesis at this chapter’s launch, then use its linked unit explanations and source records in the assigned sessions.

Five flexible sessions, normally about 50–60 minutes. Unit study uses three sessions. The sample keeps a complete 90-minute extended sitting paired with about 30 minutes of correction; extend teaching when needed.

Session 1 · Evidence for Evolution — explain and transfer

Use the worked case and a changed condition to test independent understanding.

Your task

Study the illustrated worked case, attempt varied practice and the changed independent case, then revise the opening model and complete the exit check.

  1. Prepare the assigned reading and identify the question.
  2. Trace the figures and retain a labeled first model or prior attempt.
  3. Complete the stated task before opening guidance.
  4. Compare reasoning with criteria, explain a correction and retain the revised evidence.
Hint and response guidance

Name the structures, quantities, system boundary and assumptions before selecting a mechanism.

Similar selection pressures can produce analogous functional resemblance through convergence. Close ancestry requires appropriate shared derived/homologous evidence, supported by independent records; function alone does not settle it.

  • Use the stated evidence and correct units.
  • Explain a biological mechanism or relationship.
  • Show intermediate reasoning with a labeled figure or calculation.
  • State a limitation and a useful revision/test.

Session 2 · Speciation & Mechanisms of Evolution — observe and build

Illustrative evidence case. A small random founder sample differs from its source, while separated populations can later diverge.

Your task

Read the chapter background and unit language. Make a first model, study the core explanation and Parts 1–2, then attempt their visual questions and checks.

No. Isolation, reproduction, gene flow and lineage evidence must be evaluated under an appropriate concept. The curves do not directly establish reproductive isolation or a complete lineage relationship; other evidence and a species concept are needed.

  • Use the stated evidence and correct units.
  • Explain a biological mechanism or relationship.
  • Show intermediate reasoning with a labeled figure or calculation.
  • State a limitation and a useful revision/test.

Session 3 · Speciation & Mechanisms of Evolution — connect and apply

Genetic drift is chance change in allele frequencies associated with finite reproductive sampling. A bottleneck sharply reduces population size; a founder effect concerns a small group establishing a new population. Random loss can alter representation and remove variants without proving a selective advantage. Drift can occur alongside selection and gene flow. The source gold fraction here is 6/24=1/4, while the selected survivor sample is 3/6=1/2. This example illustrates a possible outcome, not a required direction for all bottlenecks.

Your task

Study Parts 3–4 and any named source records. Attempt the whole-unit application with labeled mechanisms, correct quantities and a limitation.

No. The stated random sampling can change frequency without a fitness difference; mechanism evidence is needed. Replicated populations, size/sampling information and direct comparisons of heritable variants’ reproductive contribution under the conditions.

  • Use the stated evidence and correct units.
  • Explain a biological mechanism or relationship.
  • Show intermediate reasoning with a labeled figure or calculation.
  • State a limitation and a useful revision/test.

Session 4 · Speciation & Mechanisms of Evolution — explain and transfer

The source fraction is 30%, the founder fraction 60%. A random sample can yield that change; it does not alone demonstrate gold advantage, new mutation or completed speciation.

  • Use the stated evidence and correct units.
  • Explain a biological mechanism or relationship.
  • Show intermediate reasoning with a labeled figure or calculation.
  • State a limitation and a useful revision/test.

Session 5 · Classification & Biodiversity — observe and build

Illustrative evidence case. Equal richness can coexist with different abundance distributions and imperfect detection.

Your task

Read the chapter background and unit language. Make a first model, study the core explanation and Parts 1–2, then attempt their visual questions and checks.

No. Ranks are organizational categories rather than clocks or equal divergence measures. Convergence or overlooked characters can obscure ancestry, and new independent evidence may support a different grouping.

  • Use the stated evidence and correct units.
  • Explain a biological mechanism or relationship.
  • Show intermediate reasoning with a labeled figure or calculation.
  • State a limitation and a useful revision/test.
