Chapter 5 · Cell Division, Reproduction & Development

Assigned readings

Follow the chapter question: How can division preserve information while reproduction and development produce differences?

This week’s goals

Read More DNA, more cells and a new cell state are different changes at this chapter’s launch, then use its linked unit explanations and source records in the assigned sessions.

Five flexible sessions, normally about 50–60 minutes. Unit study uses three sessions. The sample keeps a complete 90-minute extended sitting paired with about 30 minutes of correction; extend teaching when needed.

Session 1 · Cell Division, Reproduction & Development — chapter review

Use the linked unit explanations, figures and the learner’s notebook.

Your task

Attempt the chapter review before opening solutions. Include each unit’s new visual-transfer case and connect mechanisms across the chapter.

  1. Prepare the assigned reading and identify the question.
  2. Trace the figures and retain a labeled first model or prior attempt.
  3. Complete the stated task before opening guidance.
  4. Compare reasoning with criteria, explain a correction and retain the revised evidence.
Hint and response guidance

Name the structures, quantities, system boundary and assumptions before selecting a mechanism.

Use the review solutions and question-specific rubrics; an equivalent evidence-supported explanation is valid.

  • Use the stated evidence and correct units.
  • Explain a biological mechanism or relationship.
  • Show intermediate reasoning with a labeled figure or calculation.
  • State a limitation and a useful revision/test.

Session 2 · Cell Division, Reproduction & Development — chapter quiz

Use the linked unit explanations, figures and the learner’s notebook.

Your task

Complete the chapter quiz independently, then use the objective key and human marking criteria for written responses.

Use feedback to identify a specific gap; written reasoning needs human judgment rather than keyword matching.

  • Use the stated evidence and correct units.
  • Explain a biological mechanism or relationship.
  • Show intermediate reasoning with a labeled figure or calculation.
  • State a limitation and a useful revision/test.

Session 3 · Cell Division, Reproduction & Development — revisit Mitosis & the Cell Cycle

Use the linked unit explanations, figures and the learner’s notebook.

Your task

Use marked work to select a gap. Re-explain a figure without notes, attempt the changed case and design a new comparison if secure.

After S phase there are 10 replicated chromosomes and 20 chromatids; during separation each former chromatid becomes a chromosome. Each daughter receives 10 chromosomes, preserving diploidy in the model.

  • Use the stated evidence and correct units.
  • Explain a biological mechanism or relationship.
  • Show intermediate reasoning with a labeled figure or calculation.
  • State a limitation and a useful revision/test.

Session 4 · Cell Division, Reproduction & Development — revisit Meiosis & Sexual Reproduction

Use the linked unit explanations, figures and the learner’s notebook.

Your task

Use marked work to select a gap. Re-explain a figure without notes, attempt the changed case and design a new comparison if secure.

After S: 6 chromosomes and 12 chromatids. After I: 3 replicated chromosomes and 6 chromatids per nucleus. After II: 3 unreplicated chromosomes per nucleus. The standard model includes one replication before two divisions.

  • Use the stated evidence and correct units.
  • Explain a biological mechanism or relationship.
  • Show intermediate reasoning with a labeled figure or calculation.
  • State a limitation and a useful revision/test.

Session 5 · Cell Division, Reproduction & Development — revisit Differentiation, Growth & Cell-Cycle Control

Use the linked unit explanations, figures and the learner’s notebook.

Your task

Use marked work to select a gap. Re-explain a figure without notes, attempt the changed case and design a new comparison if secure.

Different regulation can change expression without changing that tested sequence. Other genes, processing and cellular conditions can contribute; matching one gene does not establish complete genome identity or a unique cause.

  • Use the stated evidence and correct units.
  • Explain a biological mechanism or relationship.
  • Show intermediate reasoning with a labeled figure or calculation.
  • State a limitation and a useful revision/test.
