Chapter 5 · Cell Division, Reproduction & Development

Assigned readings

Follow the chapter question: How can division preserve information while reproduction and development produce differences?

This week’s goals

Read More DNA, more cells and a new cell state are different changes at this chapter’s launch, then use its linked unit explanations and source records in the assigned sessions.

Five flexible sessions, normally about 50–60 minutes. Unit study uses three sessions. The sample keeps a complete 90-minute extended sitting paired with about 30 minutes of correction; extend teaching when needed.

Session 1 · Meiosis & Sexual Reproduction — explain and transfer

Use the worked case and a changed condition to test independent understanding.

Your task

Study the illustrated worked case, attempt varied practice and the changed independent case, then revise the opening model and complete the exit check.

  1. Prepare the assigned reading and identify the question.
  2. Trace the figures and retain a labeled first model or prior attempt.
  3. Complete the stated task before opening guidance.
  4. Compare reasoning with criteria, explain a correction and retain the revised evidence.
Hint and response guidance

Name the structures, quantities, system boundary and assumptions before selecting a mechanism.

After S: 6 chromosomes and 12 chromatids. After I: 3 replicated chromosomes and 6 chromatids per nucleus. After II: 3 unreplicated chromosomes per nucleus. The standard model includes one replication before two divisions.

  • Use the stated evidence and correct units.
  • Explain a biological mechanism or relationship.
  • Show intermediate reasoning with a labeled figure or calculation.
  • State a limitation and a useful revision/test.

Session 2 · Differentiation, Growth & Cell-Cycle Control — observe and build

Illustrative evidence case. Matched sequence information can coexist with different expression patterns and developmental states.

Your task

Read the chapter background and unit language. Make a first model, study the core explanation and Parts 1–2, then attempt their visual questions and checks.

No. The axis is an expression signal, not a genome-copy count. No. It may be self-renewal; specialized properties and appropriate state evidence are needed.

  • Use the stated evidence and correct units.
  • Explain a biological mechanism or relationship.
  • Show intermediate reasoning with a labeled figure or calculation.
  • State a limitation and a useful revision/test.

Session 3 · Differentiation, Growth & Cell-Cycle Control — connect and apply

Turnover combines production and removal of cells within a defined population. A rising culture count can reflect division exceeding loss; it does not directly show the rate of one cell or whether descendants have specialized. Different tissues maintain different renewal patterns, and many cells can pause division. Migration, death and measurement boundaries matter when comparing counts. A useful explanation links signals, checkpoint conditions and measured state rather than assuming every slowly growing sample has the same defect.

Your task

Study Parts 3–4 and any named source records. Attempt the whole-unit application with labeled mechanisms, correct quantities and a limitation.

No. Birth and loss can nearly balance; direct tracking or separate rate measurements are needed. Appropriate additional markers, cell-level observations and a relevant functional test under controls.

  • Use the stated evidence and correct units.
  • Explain a biological mechanism or relationship.
  • Show intermediate reasoning with a labeled figure or calculation.
  • State a limitation and a useful revision/test.

Session 4 · Differentiation, Growth & Cell-Cycle Control — explain and transfer

Different regulation can change expression without changing that tested sequence. Other genes, processing and cellular conditions can contribute; matching one gene does not establish complete genome identity or a unique cause.

  • Use the stated evidence and correct units.
  • Explain a biological mechanism or relationship.
  • Show intermediate reasoning with a labeled figure or calculation.
  • State a limitation and a useful revision/test.

Session 5 · Reproduction & Development — observe and build

Illustrative evidence case. Division partitions material; later signals and regulation can generate specialized states and spatial structure.

Your task

Read the chapter background and unit language. Make a first model, study the core explanation and Parts 1–2, then attempt their visual questions and checks.

Ten, representing two sets of five, before any subsequent DNA replication. Division can redistribute existing material; increasing total mass requires an appropriate material/energy account.

  • Use the stated evidence and correct units.
  • Explain a biological mechanism or relationship.
  • Show intermediate reasoning with a labeled figure or calculation.
  • State a limitation and a useful revision/test.
