Chapter 4 · Matter & Energy in Living Systems

Assigned readings

Follow the chapter question: How does sunlight support living systems without creating new matter?

This week’s goals

Read A plant’s oxygen record is not the whole energy story at this chapter’s launch, then use its linked unit explanations and source records in the assigned sessions.

Five flexible sessions, normally about 50–60 minutes. Unit study uses three sessions. The sample keeps a complete 90-minute extended sitting paired with about 30 minutes of correction; extend teaching when needed.

Session 1 · Photosynthesis — explain and transfer

Use the worked case and a changed condition to test independent understanding.

Your task

Study the illustrated worked case, attempt varied practice and the changed independent case, then revise the opening model and complete the exit check.

  1. Prepare the assigned reading and identify the question.
  2. Trace the figures and retain a labeled first model or prior attempt.
  3. Complete the stated task before opening guidance.
  4. Compare reasoning with criteria, explain a correction and retain the revised evidence.
Hint and response guidance

Name the structures, quantities, system boundary and assumptions before selecting a mechanism.

Net output is 14−5 = 9 units/h. The released photosynthetic O₂ is traced to water; plants also consume oxygen, and a net gas measurement alone is not gross production.

  • Use the stated evidence and correct units.
  • Explain a biological mechanism or relationship.
  • Show intermediate reasoning with a labeled figure or calculation.
  • State a limitation and a useful revision/test.

Session 2 · Cellular Respiration — observe and build

Illustrative evidence case. Cytosolic transformations, mitochondrial electron transfer and a proton gradient have distinct roles; chamber records measure gas rather than ATP directly.

Your task

Read the chapter background and unit language. Make a first model, study the core explanation and Parts 1–2, then attempt their visual questions and checks.

Its steps do not directly require oxygen as their final acceptor; continued glycolysis also requires suitable carrier regeneration. Energy transfer, leaks, carrier pathways and competing demands change the fraction captured through ATP production.

  • Use the stated evidence and correct units.
  • Explain a biological mechanism or relationship.
  • Show intermediate reasoning with a labeled figure or calculation.
  • State a limitation and a useful revision/test.

Session 3 · Cellular Respiration — connect and apply

NAD⁺ is an electron carrier used in glycolysis, becoming reduced NADH. Fermentation regenerates NAD⁺ by transferring electrons to selected organic products, allowing glycolysis to continue under suitable conditions. In the simple glucose-to-glycolysis account, the net ATP yield is two per glucose; the fermentation conversion is not an additional large ATP-producing electron-transport system. Different fermentation pathways produce different materials, such as lactate or ethanol plus CO₂. “Anaerobic” does not name one identical pathway for every organism.

Your task

Study Parts 3–4 and any named source records. Attempt the whole-unit application with labeled mechanisms, correct quantities and a limitation.

The carrier supply would become insufficient; regeneration enables continued pathway flow under suitable conditions. The reference indicates other changes or measurement effects; matched correction and conditions are needed before attributing the full decline.

  • Use the stated evidence and correct units.
  • Explain a biological mechanism or relationship.
  • Show intermediate reasoning with a labeled figure or calculation.
  • State a limitation and a useful revision/test.

The corrected decline is 20 units, giving 2 units/min. Pathway coupling, oxygen-to-substrate relations and other demands must be specified before converting gas exchange into ATP yield.

  • Use the stated evidence and correct units.
  • Explain a biological mechanism or relationship.
  • Show intermediate reasoning with a labeled figure or calculation.
  • State a limitation and a useful revision/test.

Session 5 · Comparing Photosynthesis & Respiration — observe and build

Illustrative evidence case. A supplied day has brief production and longer consumption intervals.

Your task

Read the chapter background and unit language. Make a first model, study the core explanation and Parts 1–2, then attempt their visual questions and checks.

No. Complementary summaries conceal distinct reaction sequences and energy-transfer mechanisms. Respiration continues under suitable conditions while light-dependent photosynthetic oxygen production stops.

  • Use the stated evidence and correct units.
  • Explain a biological mechanism or relationship.
  • Show intermediate reasoning with a labeled figure or calculation.
  • State a limitation and a useful revision/test.
