Chapter 1 · Investigating the Chemistry of Life
Assigned readings
Follow the chapter question: How do structure, conditions, and evidence explain biological reactions?
This week’s goals
- Explain the figures, mechanisms and quantities before calculation.
- Distinguish source observations, illustrative records and hypotheses.
- Apply independently and revise from evidence.
Read From a growth claim to a molecular explanation at this chapter’s launch, then use its linked unit explanations and source records in the assigned sessions.
Five flexible sessions, normally about 50–60 minutes. Unit study uses three sessions. The sample keeps a complete 90-minute extended sitting paired with about 30 minutes of correction; extend teaching when needed.
Session 1 · Enzymes — connect and apply
A reaction rate measures change per time; an initial rate uses a defined early interval before large substrate depletion or product buildup. Warming can increase productive collisions, but higher temperature can disrupt an enzyme’s fold and stability. The balance creates a condition-dependent optimum. pH, enzyme identity, exposure duration and substrate conditions matter too. Low rate in the cold is not automatically denaturation; activity may return on warming. A steep loss after heating needs suitable recovery and structural evidence before its cause is assigned.
Your task
Study Parts 3–4 and any named source records. Attempt the whole-unit application with labeled mechanisms, correct quantities and a limitation.
- Prepare the assigned reading and identify the question.
- Trace the figures and retain a labeled first model or prior attempt.
- Complete the stated task before opening guidance.
- Compare reasoning with criteria, explain a correction and retain the revised evidence.
Hint and response guidance
Name the structures, quantities, system boundary and assumptions before selecting a mechanism.
No. It describes an initial-rate example under selected conditions; long-term stability and other enzyme identities require different evidence. No. Enzyme amount, denaturation, other inhibitors or different conditions could lower rate; the proposed mechanism needs further matched tests.
- Use the stated evidence and correct units.
- Explain a biological mechanism or relationship.
- Show intermediate reasoning with a labeled figure or calculation.
- State a limitation and a useful revision/test.
Session 2 · Enzymes — explain and transfer
Use the worked case and a changed condition to test independent understanding.
Your task
Study the illustrated worked case, attempt varied practice and the changed independent case, then revise the opening model and complete the exit check.
The lower barrier can increase the approach rate in both directions. It does not by itself change the equilibrium or net free-energy change, and an unfavorable isolated process still needs suitable coupling or conditions.
- Use the stated evidence and correct units.
- Explain a biological mechanism or relationship.
- Show intermediate reasoning with a labeled figure or calculation.
- State a limitation and a useful revision/test.
Session 3 · Biochemical Reactions & Energy — observe and build
Illustrative evidence case. A supplied synthesis and hydrolysis have a favorable combined change only when connected through a mechanism.
Your task
Read the chapter background and unit language. Make a first model, study the core explanation and Parts 1–2, then attempt their visual questions and checks.
No. It is a net outcome of the specified overall bond-energy accounting, not energy from breaking an isolated bond. No. ATP rebuilding requires input and useful energy disperses through cellular processes; the cycle does not create energy.
- Use the stated evidence and correct units.
- Explain a biological mechanism or relationship.
- Show intermediate reasoning with a labeled figure or calculation.
- State a limitation and a useful revision/test.
Session 4 · Biochemical Reactions & Energy — connect and apply
An endergonic process requires a positive free-energy change under the stated conditions; an exergonic process has a negative change. Coupling links processes through a mechanism so their combined outcome can proceed. Here a +12 synthesis step and −20 hydrolysis contribution sum to −8 model units. This accounting does not say that two unconnected reactions in neighboring beakers drive each other. Enzymes or molecular machines must link the relevant changes, and actual concentrations and pathways determine feasibility and rate.

The total is +5 model units, so this stated pair alone is not favorable; additional coupling or changed conditions would be needed. Not by itself. It shows faster accumulation under the supplied conditions; equilibrium and causes need appropriate endpoint and mechanistic evidence.
- Use the stated evidence and correct units.
- Explain a biological mechanism or relationship.
- Show intermediate reasoning with a labeled figure or calculation.
- State a limitation and a useful revision/test.

The net is −8 units under the supplied conditions. A catalyst can lower the activation barrier but does not make the isolated +18 process favorable by changing its endpoint free-energy balance.

Parent / teacher weekly conference
Discuss an actual attempt before opening guidance. Use written-response criteria and notebook evidence to choose support. These home-study sessions do not certify mandated investigations or school laboratory eligibility.
- Can the learner trace a figure and explain every relevant label?
- Are variables, units and stated assumptions correct?
- Can a changed case be solved without copying a worked answer?
