Measurement — Drills
Measurement has 6 drill skills. Each one generates fresh questions every time, with a hint and full worked steps, so you can keep practising a single skill until it settles.
What these drills cover
These questions use 9 ideas from the course. Follow any of them for a definition, where it is taught, and what it leads to.
- Perimeter — Distance all the way around the outside.
- Area — Space inside, measured in square units.
- Base — The number being multiplied. In 53 the base is 5.
- Factor — A number that divides evenly into another.
- Parallel — Same slope, different intercept.
- Perpendicular — Slopes multiply to -1 — negative reciprocals.
- Trapezoid — A quadrilateral with exactly one pair of parallel sides.
- Dimensions — Rows × columns. A 2 × 3 matrix has two rows and three columns.
- Height — The perpendicular distance from the base to the opposite corner.
Converting units
Unlimited questions of this kind are generated in the app. Two examples:
Problem 1
Convert 10 weeks to days.
Worked answer
70
10 × 7 = 70 days
Problem 2
Convert 8 feet to inches.
Worked answer
96
8 × 12 = 96 inches
Metric
Unlimited questions of this kind are generated in the app. Two examples:
Problem 1
Convert 5300 m to km.
Worked answer
5.3
5300 ÷ 1000 = 5.3 km
Problem 2
Convert 0.7 cm to mm.
Worked answer
7
0.7 × 10 = 7 mm
Perimeter
Unlimited questions of this kind are generated in the app. Two examples:
Problem 1
A rectangle has perimeter 36 and length 7. Find its width.
Worked answer
11
14 + 2w = 36
2w = 22, so w = 11
Problem 2
A rectangle has perimeter 38 and length 11. Find its width.
Worked answer
8
22 + 2w = 38
2w = 16, so w = 8
Area
Unlimited questions of this kind are generated in the app. Two examples:
Problem 1
A trapezoid has parallel sides 10 and 14 and height 10. Find its area.
Worked answer
120
10 + 142 = 12
12 × 10 = 120
Problem 2
Find the area of a 12 m by 13 m rectangle.
Worked answer
156
12 × 13 = 156 m2
Sqconvert
Unlimited questions of this kind are generated in the app. Two examples:
Problem 1
Convert 7 m2 to square centimetres.
Worked answer
70000
1 m2 = 100 × 100 = 10,000 cm2
7 × 10,000 = 70,000 cm2
Problem 2
Convert 14 m2 to square centimetres.
Worked answer
140000
1 m2 = 100 × 100 = 10,000 cm2
14 × 10,000 = 140,000 cm2
Composite figures
Unlimited questions of this kind are generated in the app. Two examples:
Problem 1
An L-shape is a 9 × 10 rectangle with a 3 × 4 rectangle cut from one corner. Find its area.
Worked answer
78
9 × 10 = 90
3 × 4 = 12
90 - 12 = 78
Problem 2
An L-shape is a 12 × 8 rectangle with a 2 × 4 rectangle cut from one corner. Find its area.
Worked answer
88
12 × 8 = 96
2 × 4 = 8
96 - 8 = 88
