3 questions in the course bank use Multiplier, in Proportional Reasoning with Percents, Multi-Step Equations.

Problem 1

A price goes up 20%, then down 20%. The final price is what percent of the original?

Worked answer

96

Up 20%: multiplier 1.20

Down 20%: multiplier 0.80

1.20 × 0.80 = 0.96 = 96%

A 4% net decrease — the two changes are measured from different starting points.

Problem 2

A $1,200 laptop is 15% off, then 8% tax is added to the sale price. Find the final cost.

Worked answer

1101.60

Sale: 1200 × 0.85 = 1020

Tax: 1020 × 1.08 = 1101.60

Or in one line: 1200 × 0.85 × 1.08 = 1101.60

Problem 3

Solve -3(x - 5) = 21.

Worked answer

-2

-3x + 15 = 21

-3x = 6

x = -2
