Parent plan · Week 35 · Sample exam and targeted re-teaching — English 9: Experience, Perspective & Inquiry
Parent teaching plan · 36 weeksUnits to teach or revisit
Chapter 8 · Epic Comparison, Discussion & Presentation
Assigned readings
This week connects focused skill instruction with a sustained reading or writing assignment. Keep evidence notes, drafts, feedback, and corrections in the portfolio.
This week’s goals
- Retrieval map: complete the text-based task and explain a relevant detail.
- Criterion review: use the linked unit method independently.
- Correction conference: review criteria and record a next goal.
Use the distinct Sample Exam as rehearsal; keep the Final Exam unseen until Week 36.
Five sessions of about 40–50 minutes, plus 20–30 minutes of sustained reading most days. Spread long passages across reading time; shorten or extend the schedule according to comprehension. Exam sessions may be combined as specified in the paper.
Session 1 · Retrieval map
A practical method: read once for literal understanding, mark a relevant detail, write a tentative response, then test it against another detail. In a language task, identify the intended meaning before changing the sentence. In a research task, record what each source actually establishes before synthesizing. For Grade 9, the application expectation is: Trace a change across a passage and consider one competing explanation. Plan a response of about 180–250 words when a task calls for a developed paragraph; a sentence-editing task may need much less. These lengths guide planning rather than replace the success criteria.
Your task
Build a one-page map of reading, argument, research, narrative, language, and speaking methods from memory.
- Prepare (5 minutes): retrieve the relevant method and state one question.
- Study (10–15 minutes): read or reread the named passage and annotate relevant details.
- Apply (15–20 minutes): complete the task independently, using accurate source references.
- Reflect (5 minutes): explain a choice, check the criteria, and record a next step.
Hint and response guidance
Begin with a short, precisely located detail or sentence. Explain its relevance before extending the conclusion.
Connections should include evidence scope and revision, not only topic names. Check the units afterward and mark missing relationships.
- Accurately complete the assigned task.
- Use relevant evidence or a purposeful language/craft choice.
- Explain the reasoning or effect and preserve an important qualification.
Session 2 · Sample paper
Read the named section before making an inference. State the task in your own words and locate the evidence it requires.
Your task
Complete the sample exam under the intended final conditions.
Use unseen passages, source references, and the supplied criteria. Record time, supports, and where a response stalls.
- Accurately complete the assigned task.
- Use relevant evidence or a purposeful language/craft choice.
- Explain the reasoning or effect and preserve an important qualification.
Session 3 · Criterion review
Explain how a detail supports the claim; separate what the text states from your interpretation and what remains uncertain.
Your task
Mark and classify errors as comprehension, evidence, reasoning, language, or time management.
A category points to a repair strategy. An overall total without diagnosis provides little guidance for the final week.
- Accurately complete the assigned task.
- Use relevant evidence or a purposeful language/craft choice.
- Explain the reasoning or effect and preserve an important qualification.
Session 4 · Targeted lesson
Draft for purpose and audience first. Use the linked unit to review the method, then apply it to this week’s text rather than copying a model.
Your task
Choose the two weakest categories and complete one fresh application in each.
Return to the relevant unit’s method, then apply it to a new detail or sentence. Recopying the exam model is not fresh practice.
- Accurately complete the assigned task.
- Use relevant evidence or a purposeful language/craft choice.
- Explain the reasoning or effect and preserve an important qualification.
Session 5 · Correction conference
Use feedback to test meaning, evidence, and scope. Revise substantive issues before editing conventions; preserve the earlier version.
Your task
Explain why each corrected response is stronger and create a concise final-check routine.
A useful routine checks the task, source scope, evidence explanation, qualification, and clarity before submission.
- Accurately complete the assigned task.
- Use relevant evidence or a purposeful language/craft choice.
- Explain the reasoning or effect and preserve an important qualification.
Submit this week
- Complete the sample exam under the intended final conditions.
- Choose the two weakest categories and complete one fresh application in each.
- Explain why each corrected response is stronger and create a concise final-check routine.
Parent / teacher weekly conference
Keep the sample and final separate. If a major misunderstanding remains, extend teaching instead of using the final as a substitute for instruction.
- Can the learner summarize the reading before interpreting it?
- Can the learner point to the evidence or explain the language choice?
- Does the response preserve source scope and a relevant uncertainty?
- What should be re-taught before the next week?
