Chapter 2 · Poetry, Drama & Longer Reading
Assigned readings
This week connects focused skill instruction with a sustained reading or writing assignment. Keep evidence notes, drafts, feedback, and corrections in the portfolio.
This week’s goals
- Evidence matrix: complete the text-based task and explain a relevant detail.
- Language and framing: use the linked unit method independently.
- Evidence response: review criteria and record a next goal.
Read VII–IX. Focus on how hypotheses arise from limited observations.
Five sessions of about 40–50 minutes, plus 20–30 minutes of sustained reading most days. Spread long passages across reading time; shorten or extend the schedule according to comprehension. Exam sessions may be combined as specified in the paper.
Session 1 · Evidence matrix
A practical method: read once for literal understanding, mark a relevant detail, write a tentative response, then test it against another detail. In a language task, identify the intended meaning before changing the sentence. In a research task, record what each source actually establishes before synthesizing. For Grade 9, the application expectation is: Trace a change across a passage and consider one competing explanation. Plan a response of about 180–250 words when a task calls for a developed paragraph; a sentence-editing task may need much less. These lengths guide planning rather than replace the success criteria.
Your task
Make two columns for evidence about Eloi and Morlocks, and a third for the traveler’s inference.
- Prepare (5 minutes): retrieve the relevant method and state one question.
- Study (10–15 minutes): read or reread the named passage and annotate relevant details.
- Apply (15–20 minutes): complete the task independently, using accurate source references.
- Reflect (5 minutes): explain a choice, check the criteria, and record a next step.
Hint and response guidance
Begin with a short, precisely located detail or sentence. Explain its relevance before extending the conclusion.
Separate above-ground behavior and underground conditions from the social-history theory. Do not treat every causal statement as independently observed.
- Accurately complete the assigned task.
- Use relevant evidence or a purposeful language/craft choice.
- Explain the reasoning or effect and preserve an important qualification.
Session 2 · Alternative hypothesis
Read the named section before making an inference. State the task in your own words and locate the evidence it requires.
Your task
Propose another explanation for one observed detail. State what would distinguish it.
A supported hypothesis names a particular observation, offers a plausible alternative, and identifies a missing historical or behavioral record.
- Accurately complete the assigned task.
- Use relevant evidence or a purposeful language/craft choice.
- Explain the reasoning or effect and preserve an important qualification.
Session 3 · Language and framing
Explain how a detail supports the claim; separate what the text states from your interpretation and what remains uncertain.
Your task
Examine two words the traveler uses for the groups. How do they shape judgment?
- Prepare (5 minutes): retrieve the relevant method and state one question.
- Study (10–15 minutes): read or reread the named passage and annotate relevant details.
- Apply (15–20 minutes): complete the task independently, using accurate source references.
- Reflect (5 minutes): explain a choice, check the criteria, and record a next step.
Hint and response guidance
Begin with a short, precisely located detail or sentence. Explain its relevance before extending the conclusion.
Choose exact diction and explain its connotations. The analysis concerns the account’s perspective; it should not repeat dehumanizing classifications as established fact.
- Accurately complete the assigned task.
- Use relevant evidence or a purposeful language/craft choice.
- Explain the reasoning or effect and preserve an important qualification.
Session 4 · Discussion
Draft for purpose and audience first. Use the linked unit to review the method, then apply it to this week’s text rather than copying a model.
Your task
Debate whether the traveler is a reliable interpreter. Define reliability before deciding.
Reliability can differ between reporting a visible action and explaining an unseen history. A qualified assessment avoids a single all-or-nothing label.
- Accurately complete the assigned task.
- Use relevant evidence or a purposeful language/craft choice.
- Explain the reasoning or effect and preserve an important qualification.
Session 5 · Evidence response
Use feedback to test meaning, evidence, and scope. Revise substantive issues before editing conventions; preserve the earlier version.
Your task
Write a paragraph evaluating one inference using the unit’s evidence criteria.
Explain relevance and sufficiency, identify scope, and name what remains uncertain. Use details from the assigned chapters.
- Accurately complete the assigned task.
- Use relevant evidence or a purposeful language/craft choice.
- Explain the reasoning or effect and preserve an important qualification.

Parent / teacher weekly conference
Check whether the learner distinguishes reliability of observation from certainty of explanation.
- Can the learner summarize the reading before interpreting it?
- Can the learner point to the evidence or explain the language choice?
- Does the response preserve source scope and a relevant uncertainty?
- What should be re-taught before the next week?
