Chapter 4 · Argument & Rhetoric

Assigned readings

Follow the chapter/unit sequence here; the student-facing lesson names do not depend on a calendar week. Keep drafts, reading notes and corrections in a portfolio.

This week’s goals

Read Anne of Green Gables, Chapters 6–7. Keep a literal summary, a short quotation, a choice or idea and one question for each assigned chapter. Read the assigned complete short selections. For books, follow the chapter groups above, keep early interpretations tentative and return to whole-book conclusions after finishing. For an exam week, the unseen paper supplies its own sources.

Five sessions of 45–60 minutes. English courses add 20–30 minutes of sustained book reading on most days. Exam papers retain their full stated time; combine blocks where specified, then use the remaining time for marking and correction.

Session 1 · Revision and source check — chapter workshop

Use three to five sessions of 35–45 minutes for planning, drafting, feedback, and revision. For the book study, use the separate six-week plan. Grade 8 developed essays generally reach 600 words when the task warrants it; presentations last 3 minutes. Assess meaning and evidence before length.

Your task

Revision and source check — A qualified argument: Recommend a response to the issue in the source packet. Use at least two sources, answer a serious counterclaim, and state a practical condition or limitation. Submit the revised work, source labels and a before-and-after explanation of the most important change.

  1. Retrieve the relevant definition and restate the question.
  2. Read the supplied selection or case; mark the exact evidence or structure.
  3. Complete the task independently before opening the response guidance.
  4. Explain the relationship, compare the model and record a specific revision or unresolved question.
Hint and response guidance

Begin with the actual source detail or sentence; keep the claim within what it establishes.

A strong argument responds to overlapping concerns rather than dismissing a source. It distinguishes an observation from a general claim and explains why a conditional proposal is justified. Grade-specific direction: Maya initially conceals a lost key because she equates independence with never needing help. Elena’s account of pretending and the father’s emphasis on safety challenge that assumption. The returned key and ribbon suggest responsibility includes communicating and using practical support.

  • A focused response to the assigned purpose.
  • Accurate use of the reading or an honestly presented experience.
  • Relevant evidence or purposeful narrative detail with explanation.
  • A coherent structure and language suited to the audience.
  • A substantive revision and a clear reflection.

Session 2 · Chapter review — Argument & Rhetoric

Teach this unit across two core sessions: Parts 1–2 with the first worked case, then Parts 3–4 with the changed case and independent application. Allow 45–60 minutes per session, followed by separate reading/writing or source-study sessions in the parent plan. Pause at each question; do not assign this entire page as one short lecture.

Your task

Complete the chapter review for Argument & Rhetoric. For one response that needs repair, identify the missing evidence or reasoning and write a corrected answer using the relevant unit example.

Use the per-question worked solutions as a diagnostic guide. A correction must explain why the original reasoning failed; copied answers alone do not demonstrate learning.

  • Answer the specific question accurately.
  • Use a relevant detail and explain why it matters.
  • Apply the unit’s defined terms or method correctly.
  • Recognize a meaningful limitation or alternative.

Session 3 · Chapter quiz — Argument & Rhetoric

Teach this unit across two core sessions: Parts 1–2 with the first worked case, then Parts 3–4 with the changed case and independent application. Allow 45–60 minutes per session, followed by separate reading/writing or source-study sessions in the parent plan. Pause at each question; do not assign this entire page as one short lecture.

Your task

Take the Argument & Rhetoric chapter quiz independently with response guidance closed. A parent marks written answers using the listed criteria and records one skill to revisit.

Objective keys check the selected statement; written responses require the listed evidence and reasoning. Keep the uncorrected attempt, marking notes and later correction as separate records.

  • Answer the specific question accurately.
  • Use a relevant detail and explain why it matters.
  • Apply the unit’s defined terms or method correctly.
  • Recognize a meaningful limitation or alternative.

Session 4 · Midterm Exam — paper block 1

Teach this unit across two core sessions: Parts 1–2 with the first worked case, then Parts 3–4 with the changed case and independent application. Allow 45–60 minutes per session, followed by separate reading/writing or source-study sessions in the parent plan. Pause at each question; do not assign this entire page as one short lecture.

Your task

Assessment block 1 — Midterm Exam: Use 60 minutes to begin the same paper. Keep the key closed until all 90 paper minutes are finished. Continue remaining paper time in the next block; do not restart the allowance.

Total paper time is 90 minutes across the combined blocks, followed by marking. Use the separate per-question criteria and record help supplied. A correction explains reasoning and does not replace the original exam response.

  • Answer the specific question accurately.
  • Use a relevant detail and explain why it matters.
  • Apply the unit’s defined terms or method correctly.
  • Recognize a meaningful limitation or alternative.

Session 5 · Midterm Exam — finish paper and feedback

Teach this unit across two core sessions: Parts 1–2 with the first worked case, then Parts 3–4 with the changed case and independent application. Allow 45–60 minutes per session, followed by separate reading/writing or source-study sessions in the parent plan. Pause at each question; do not assign this entire page as one short lecture.

Your task

Assessment block 2 — Midterm Exam: Use 30 minutes to continue and finish the same paper. Keep the key closed until all 90 paper minutes are finished. Then use 30 minutes for human marking and changed-case corrections; retain the original answers.

Ask the learner to summarize the source before discussing an inference. Check two details against the local text. Use the criteria to discuss reasoning, then choose the next step from the response rather than from completion alone.
