Chapter 8 · Discussion, Presentation & Portfolio

Assigned readings

This is the parent timetable. Student navigation follows chapters and units. A week can finish one chapter and begin the next; follow the named lessons in order and retain drafts and reading notes.

This week’s goals

For the class sessions, read the named selections linked in the individual unit lessons: The Unfinished Sign, The Last Seat, Three Poems: Openings, Between Lines, and The Borrowed Map, Planning an After-School Room: Four Sources, Treasure Island, A Quiet Minute.

Five class sessions of about 40–45 minutes, plus 15–20 minutes of independent reading most days; the complete novel is assigned during that separate reading time. Adjust and extend for comprehension. The midterm uses two 45-minute sessions and the final three 40-minute sessions within their stated totals.

Session 1 · Develop and seek feedback · A year-end comparison, presentation & portfolio conference

Plan the functions of your paragraphs or scene sections. Draft the opening and one developed section during Session 1. Complete the draft during Session 2. Ask one focused feedback question about meaning or evidence, and record the response.

Your task

Write a 400–600-word comparison of two course readings through a shared question. Present its main reasoning in two to three minutes, then submit five portfolio categories and a reflection with two substantive revisions and one next goal. Continue the draft; ask a reader one specific question, and record the feedback before opening the workshop model.

  1. Prepare (5 minutes): recall the relevant distinction and state the task.
  2. Read or examine (10 minutes): use the named passage, source label, or sentence.
  3. Apply (20–25 minutes): complete the task independently and record references.
  4. Reflect (5 minutes): compare with criteria, revise one choice, and save the work.
Hint and response guidance

Begin with an accurate short detail. Explain its job before extending the claim.

The evidence should keep the characters’ situations distinct. Ari pauses beside a blocked route and is unsure what he may move. Hana stands while jackets occupy a chair, and later points out a detail missed in the reading. Neither pause nor smile proves the motive another person first assigns. These details allow a comparison about assumptions while preserving different events and roles. For the presentation, introduce that shared question, explain one accurate detail from each ending, and name the difference. A simple two-column evidence table is enough; it should identify text and paragraph, not rank which character is better. In the portfolio conference, a before-and-after claim might change “Both reject every rule” to “Both retain a useful purpose while changing a limiting arrangement.” That revision resolves an overclaim. A next goal could be explaining the relevance of a short quotation before adding another one.

  • Accurately complete the assigned task using the supplied reading or sentence.
  • Explain a relevant detail or grammatical/craft relationship.
  • Preserve a significant qualification and use a traceable reference when needed.

Session 2 · Revise and reflect · A year-end comparison, presentation & portfolio conference

During Session 3, revise the main claim, sequence, or detail before editing. Verify each quotation, number, and source reference. Submit the final response, earlier draft, evidence notes, and a reflection explaining two changes and one next goal.

Your task

Write a 400–600-word comparison of two course readings through a shared question. Present its main reasoning in two to three minutes, then submit five portfolio categories and a reflection with two substantive revisions and one next goal. Revise the main reader problem, edit, and submit the earlier draft, final version, evidence notes, and a two-change reflection.

The endings keep useful purposes rather than abolish planning. Leila retains the sign and invites suggestions beneath it. Mateo retains the questions but removes chair numbers. His uneven oval contrasts with the orderly questions. A qualified synthesis is that a reliable plan can preserve its purpose while allowing revision to its arrangement. The remaining obstacles in Leila’s story prevent a guarantee that one change welcomes everyone perfectly.

Session 3 · Discussion, Presentation & Portfolio · Chapter review

Retrieve the chapter methods before rereading. Use mistakes as a guide to what needs another example.

Your task

Complete the ten chapter-review questions for Discussion, Presentation & Portfolio. Mark each against its guidance and rewrite two missed responses with an explanation.

Each of the five units contributes two review tasks. Check the relationship or source limit actually asked for; a supported alternative can be correct. Name the corrected detail and explain why your earlier claim or sentence failed.

  • Accurately complete the assigned task using the supplied reading or sentence.
  • Explain a relevant detail or grammatical/craft relationship.
  • Preserve a significant qualification and use a traceable reference when needed.

Session 4 · Discussion, Presentation & Portfolio · Chapter quiz

The quiz checks each of the five units. Written answers stay pending until a person reviews them.

Your task

Attempt the ten chapter-quiz questions for Discussion, Presentation & Portfolio independently. Discuss human-marked written responses and record one next practice goal.

A parent compares written reasoning with the model and the prompt rather than awarding marks by word matching. Return to the actual passage and distinguish a mistaken fact from a plausible alternative interpretation.

  • Accurately complete the assigned task using the supplied reading or sentence.
  • Explain a relevant detail or grammatical/craft relationship.
  • Preserve a significant qualification and use a traceable reference when needed.

Session 5 · Sample exam rehearsal

Use the supplied sample paper and agreed support. Keep the key closed during the attempt.

Your task

Attempt the distinct 45-minute sample exam independently, then save the attempt for the next session’s review.

This is a rehearsal using different unseen passages. Check how you allocate reading time and leave time to explain evidence.

  • Accurately complete the assigned task using the supplied reading or sentence.
  • Explain a relevant detail or grammatical/craft relationship.
  • Preserve a significant qualification and use a traceable reference when needed.
