Chapter 2 · Poetry, Drama & Whole-Book Reading

Assigned readings

Follow the chapter/unit sequence here; the student-facing lesson names do not depend on a calendar week. Keep drafts, reading notes and corrections in a portfolio.

This week’s goals

Read The Secret Garden, Chapters 2–3. Keep a literal summary, a short quotation, a choice or idea and one question for each assigned chapter. Read the assigned complete short selections. For books, follow the chapter groups above, keep early interpretations tentative and return to whole-book conclusions after finishing. For an exam week, the unseen paper supplies its own sources. Also read the complete model or source named in the daily task; do not replace it with only the annotation headings.

Five sessions of 45–60 minutes. English courses add 20–30 minutes of sustained book reading on most days. Exam papers retain their full stated time; combine blocks where specified, then use the remaining time for marking and correction.

Session 1 · Evaluate using agreed criteria

Quality judgments need established criteria as well as reactions. Keep the distinction between liking a piece and explaining an evaluated choice.

Your task

Compare a complete course poem with the response poem or another course selection. Before judging, choose three criteria such as precision of language, coherence of an idea and the relationship between form and meaning. Give evidence for an evaluation and distinguish it from personal preference.

  1. Read the complete named text or source and record its title.
  2. Identify the actual choices, evidence or structures relevant to this task.
  3. Complete an independent explanation or draft before reading the response guidance.
  4. Discuss the criteria, revise a specific point and retain both versions.
Hint and response guidance

Name a precise passage or sentence, then explain its role. A method transfers; the original wording does not need to.

A supported evaluation applies the same stated criteria to both works and cites details. A preference can be honest without establishing quality by itself. Alternative evaluations can be reasonable when their criteria and evidence are clear.

  • Complete the assigned task accurately.
  • Use located details and explain the connection.
  • Show a meaningful revision or qualification.

Session 2 · Read, apply and revisit — Reading a Complete Novel

Teach this unit across two core sessions: Parts 1–2 with the first worked case, then Parts 3–4 with the changed case and independent application. Allow 45–60 minutes per session, followed by separate reading/writing or source-study sessions in the parent plan. Pause at each question; do not assign this entire page as one short lecture.

Your task

Consolidation 3 for Poetry, Drama & Whole-Book Reading: Identify the precise error and write a corrected explanation. Record the source or sentence, explain the reasoning, then compare with an earlier portfolio response on Reading a Complete Novel and name a specific improvement.

  1. Retrieve the relevant definition and restate the question.
  2. Read the supplied selection or case; mark the exact evidence or structure.
  3. Complete the task independently before opening the response guidance.
  4. Explain the relationship, compare the model and record a specific revision or unresolved question.
Hint and response guidance

Begin with the actual source detail or sentence; keep the claim within what it establishes.

The unread ending cannot support that claim. Record a tentative prediction, continue the scheduled chapters and return to opening, middle and ending details before making a whole-book interpretation.

  • Answer the specific question accurately.
  • Use a relevant detail and explain why it matters.
  • Apply the unit’s defined terms or method correctly.
  • Recognize a meaningful limitation or alternative.

Session 3 · Read, apply and revisit — Comparing Genres & Interpretations

Teach this unit across two core sessions: Parts 1–2 with the first worked case, then Parts 3–4 with the changed case and independent application. Allow 45–60 minutes per session, followed by separate reading/writing or source-study sessions in the parent plan. Pause at each question; do not assign this entire page as one short lecture.

Your task

Consolidation 4 for Poetry, Drama & Whole-Book Reading: Compare the reasoning in the two cases. What method transfers, and which source detail must be checked again? Record the source or sentence, explain the reasoning, then compare with an earlier portfolio response on Comparing Genres & Interpretations and name a specific improvement.

In the first case, The narrative makes a changed measure of success explicit, while the play shows a revised arrangement through action. Both permit improvement while retaining limits. In the changed case, Narration can state the changed understanding explicitly, while the play gives the audience an action to interpret. Both can question completeness, but a silent gesture leaves different room for performance and inference. The method of defining the relationship and testing relevant evidence transfers; the particular source detail and scope must be checked anew.

  • Answer the specific question accurately.
  • Use a relevant detail and explain why it matters.
  • Apply the unit’s defined terms or method correctly.
  • Recognize a meaningful limitation or alternative.

Session 4 · Chapter review — Poetry, Drama & Whole-Book Reading

Teach this unit across two core sessions: Parts 1–2 with the first worked case, then Parts 3–4 with the changed case and independent application. Allow 45–60 minutes per session, followed by separate reading/writing or source-study sessions in the parent plan. Pause at each question; do not assign this entire page as one short lecture.

Your task

Complete the chapter review for Poetry, Drama & Whole-Book Reading. For one response that needs repair, identify the missing evidence or reasoning and write a corrected answer using the relevant unit example.

Use the per-question worked solutions as a diagnostic guide. A correction must explain why the original reasoning failed; copied answers alone do not demonstrate learning.

  • Answer the specific question accurately.
  • Use a relevant detail and explain why it matters.
  • Apply the unit’s defined terms or method correctly.
  • Recognize a meaningful limitation or alternative.

Session 5 · Chapter quiz — Poetry, Drama & Whole-Book Reading

Teach this unit across two core sessions: Parts 1–2 with the first worked case, then Parts 3–4 with the changed case and independent application. Allow 45–60 minutes per session, followed by separate reading/writing or source-study sessions in the parent plan. Pause at each question; do not assign this entire page as one short lecture.

Your task

Take the Poetry, Drama & Whole-Book Reading chapter quiz independently with response guidance closed. A parent marks written answers using the listed criteria and records one skill to revisit.

Objective keys check the selected statement; written responses require the listed evidence and reasoning. Keep the uncorrected attempt, marking notes and later correction as separate records.

  • Answer the specific question accurately.
  • Use a relevant detail and explain why it matters.
  • Apply the unit’s defined terms or method correctly.
  • Recognize a meaningful limitation or alternative.

Ask the learner to summarize the source before discussing an inference. Check two details against the local text. Use the criteria to discuss reasoning, then choose the next step from the response rather than from completion alone.
